In James Q. Wilson's commentary, "Cars and Their Enemies" Wilson begins by asking his readers to place themselves in a world in which cars don't exist, and suddenly, someone suggests the invention of the "personal automobile." In the following paragraphs, Wilson lists different figures of authority and their reactions to such an idea. "Environmentalists would react in horror...(cars) eject large amounts of unpleasant gases into the air, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide," he writes. "Governors...would wonder who would pay for the vast networks of roads that would be needed to carry automobiles. " Each argument is backed up by a series of evidence, causing the reader to review the downfalls of owning an automobile, almost causing them to reevaluate the role their vehicles have played in their life.
Wilson's commentary is extremely insightful; as stated earlier it provokes readers to reevaluate the role in which they have allowed vehicles to play in their lives. Coming from a personal perspective, cars are a huge aspect in my life. I've been without a car for a solid two weeks now, and it's been extremely difficult to get to-and-from places. Sure, cars are convenient. Wilson's purpose was to illustrate how petty the need truly is, and illustrate alternative methods. When possible, it's always a good idea to walk or maybe ride a bike.
