"Politics and the English Language" was written in 1946 by George Orwell. Orwell is best known for his strongly opinionated works, and this one does not stray from his namesake. The purpose of this book is best illustrated in the line, "...ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts." The language in which Orwell utilizes is sometimes difficult to interpret, as exemplified in the quote above. My interpretation is that Orwell believes that a lack of fluency as well as a lack of use of loaded language leads to foolish and even ignorant thoughts.
The establishment of credibility is crucial when writing an essay as strongly opinionated as this one. Orwell supports his argument by using evidence from two sources: an article on psychology from the magazine Politics and a letter from the Tribune. He establishes his credibility in doing so, because both sources are extremely reliable. The diction and language Orwell used to develop his point also contribute to his credibility, as they give off the sense that he is educated. Overall, it was a well written essay that developed his point accurately. The name "George Orwell" seems to have a negative connotation, but this was by far one of his best written essays.
