Paul Roberts is the author of the article, "How to Say Nothing in 500 Words." The title is a perfect fit, because it immediately grasps the attention of the reader. Overall, the flow and structure of the article is unique to that of any other I have ever read. Roberts introduces the article with a stream of incredible imagery that causes the reader to feel as though they are literally in the shoes of the person Roberts describes. "You are just looking forward dreamily to the weekend when the English instructor says: "For Monday you will turn in a five hundred-word composition on college football," Roberts begins. The next paragraph takes the unique turn which I mentioned earlier, Roberts turns to legitimately write an essay on the topic quoted above. He uses accurate essay format and strong sentence structure to exemplify what the ideal essay should appear as.
Next, Roberts creates several different categories and groups paragraphs together that fall within the same topic area. He separates each category by heading them with bold letters and titles. The overall purpose of this article was fairly ironic, as the title implies one thing, and the purpose contrasts it with another. From the title, you assume the article will be somewhat philosophical. For example, an extensive essay on the use of body language, how to use silence to deliver a point. However, it turns out to be quite the opposite. Roberts intends to teach his audience how to write an accurate and effective essay. For that reason, it is assumed that his intended audience is high school students. The article as a whole was effective and did an excellent job of grasping the readers attention. Although personally, I was already aware of how to write an essay, I still found the article to be engaging.
